I’ve just attempted to make my first contribution to a 3D map of the world using Google Building Maker. This is the apartment block in Barcelona where my family and I spent two weeks of our summer holidays this year. As you can see from the above image, I haven’t quite got the geometry right yet but the experience of fashioning this little slice of the world and zooming in to see it inside Google Earth is quite amazing. Unbelievably, London doesn’t appear in the list of approved cities in Building Maker, otherwise I would have had a go at re-creating my own house. My building is currently awaiting review by the Google team. If it’s successful it will take its rightful place in the 3D version of Barcelona. Cool.

That’s all folks!

Tomorrow is the official start of the new school term. That means our holiday is well and truly over. This blog will stand as an archive of our lovely holiday experiences this year but this is the very last post.

‘Night all.

Jazz on the Southbank this afternoon

I didn’t catch the name of these hipsters but they were amazingly good, playing at the top of the stairs outside the RFH. A great mixture of Nu-Jazz, Breakbeat and Drum and Bass. Nice! You’ll have to forgive the wind noises.

Doodling on the placemats at Wagamama

A great afternoon

Our final full day of holiday was spent browsing in a bookshop, visiting an exhibition about creativity and eating noodles. Perfect!

Jesse and Florence were very keen to do the filming this holiday. Here is the result of their efforts to capture our experiences in Barcelona.

Back at the ranch

We arrived home tired and hungry this afternoon from Barcelona. It was so strange to see the greenery as the plane descended towards Gatwick and to feel the cold air of London on our slightly sunburnt skin. The family in front of us on the way down to collect our bags were still in shorts and flip flops and looked positively frozen.

On the walk home from the train station everyone remarked on how much sky we could see, how quiet everything seemed and how low all the buildings were. We thought the kids would be really glad to be back home but they were strangely quiet and seemed a bit sad. It will take them a couple of days to readjust. It was lovely to be back in our own home but we have had the most wonderful holiday.

We very much hope to stay in contact with our excellent exchange partners, Israel and Gloria. They went to a lot of trouble to make us feel at home in their flat, created a wiki full of interesting information to help us find our way round and kept in touch by email throughout our stay, offering yet more vital clues about the wealth of culture in Barcelona. Our home exchange experience has convinced us to try it again next year. Our only challenge now is trying to think of somewhere we’d all like to go and persuade someone who lives there to come to London.
